An AI Overview appears and clicks fall.

The pattern in one line

A Google AI Overview now appears for your keywords, your rank has not moved, and clicks to your page have fallen.

When Google shows an AI Overview above the results, some searchers get their answer without clicking. Your position can stay the same while clicks fall. Confirm it by checking which keywords now trigger an AI Overview and comparing clicks before and after. Then focus on queries where a click still adds something.

What this looks like

Rank tracking looks calm. You still sit in the top 3 for a set of question-style keywords. But the clicks from those queries have fallen, and they keep falling month over month.

Open the results page and look at what sits above you. If Google now shows an AI Overview for those queries, searchers see a written answer first. Some of them have what they need and never click. Others click the links inside the overview. Your listing, still at the same position, sits lower on the page than it used to.

This is a change in the page layout and not in your ranking. Standard rank reports miss it, because they record position and not what appears around it.

None of this means the queries are lost. It means the job changes. For queries that show an overview, the goal is to be 1 of the linked pages and to offer something a short summary cannot. For queries without one, the usual work on titles and content still applies.

The queries most likely to be affected are informational ones where a short answer is enough. Queries where the reader needs to buy, book, or compare in detail can hold up better, since a summary cannot complete those tasks.

Common traits

  • Rank tracking shows no meaningful position change
  • Clicks and click-through rate fall for the same queries
  • The results page now shows an AI Overview where it did not before
  • Question-style queries are affected more often than purchase queries
  • Impressions hold steady or rise

Why it happens

  1. The answer now appears on the results page

For simple questions, the overview may satisfy the searcher before they reach a listing.

  2. Your listing sits lower on the page

The overview pushes organic results further down the screen, especially on mobile.

  3. Your page gives away the whole answer

A page that can be summarized in 2 sentences gives the reader little reason to click once that summary is shown.

  4. You are not among the linked pages

Pages linked inside the overview can still earn some clicks from it. If yours is not among them, you lose the click without gaining the link.

How to confirm it in Doily

  1. Open rank tracking and check which of your keywords show an AI Overview in the SERP features.
  2. Compare your daily Google position for those keywords with a period before the overview appeared.
  3. Check clicks and impressions for the same dates in Google Search Console, where click data comes from.
  4. Open AI visibility and see whether your pages are cited by Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode for the matching prompts.

Fixes to try

Fix Impact Effort
Split keywords into those that show an AI Overview and those that do not, and report them separately Medium Low
Rework pages on overview keywords so they offer something a summary cannot, such as tools, data, or detail High High
Make the page clear and quotable so it can be 1 of the pages linked in the overview Medium Medium
Shift effort toward queries with commercial intent, where a click still matters Medium Medium
Update titles and descriptions to say what the full page adds Low Low

What to watch after

  • Share of your keywords that show an AI Overview
  • Click-through rate on affected queries
  • Citations in Google AI Overviews
  • Clicks on queries without an overview

Questions

Did my ranking drop?

Not in this pattern. Position holds, but the page around your listing changed. Check rank history to rule out a real drop.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

Google documents nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, and noindex as the controls for limiting what Search shows from your pages. They also affect regular snippets, and noindex removes the page from results, so read the current documentation before using them.

Is the click loss permanent?

Not necessarily. Layouts and the queries that trigger overviews change. Track it keyword by keyword and adjust.
