Why it matters
llms.txt is a proposal from Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI, published in 2024 at llmstxt.org. The idea is a markdown file at the root of your site that gives a language model a short, curated map of the pages worth reading, with a short note on each.
The format is simple on purpose. It has an H1 with the name, a blockquote summary, optional notes, and then H2 sections that hold lists of links with short descriptions. A section named Optional marks links a model can skip when its context is short.
Be realistic about the payoff. It is a community proposal, not an adopted standard, and search engines have not committed to reading it. Google's documentation on AI features says you do not need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The file costs little to publish, and writing it forces a useful decision about which 10 to 20 pages best explain your business. Keep the notes factual, link only to live pages, and update the file when your site changes. Do not expect it to change rankings or citations on its own.

Questions
Where do I upload llms.txt?
At the root of your domain, for example https://example.com/llms.txt, served as plain text or markdown.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch. llms.txt suggests what is worth reading. It does not allow or block anything.
Which pages should I list?
Pages that explain what you do and answer common questions, such as services, pricing, policies, and your best guides. Leave out login pages, carts, and tag archives.
Will it get me into AI answers?
No major engine has published support for it. Measure instead: check whether AI answers cite your pages before and after you publish the file.
