Many pages, little traffic.

The pattern in one line

The site keeps growing, but a small share of its pages earn nearly all the traffic.

A large page count does not produce traffic by itself. Search engines keep pages that serve a need, and many sites publish pages that overlap, repeat, or answer questions nobody asks. Audit every page for clicks, indexing, and purpose, then merge, improve, or remove the ones that do not earn their place.

Pages Up
Indexed pages Flat
Clicks Flat

What this looks like

Every month the site adds more pages: new blog posts, new service variations, a location page for each town. The count rises. The traffic does not. Open the page report and a few pages carry nearly all of it, while the long tail sits at zero.

Pages earn clicks when they answer a question someone asks, and answer it better than other pages do. Publishing in volume without that test produces overlap, near duplicates, and pages that exist because a template allowed them. Search engines may choose not to index many of them, and the ones that are indexed compete for attention.

The extra pages can cost something. On larger sites crawlers spend time on them, internal links spread thin, and the site’s best pages sit among weaker ones. Updating hundreds of low-value pages also eats time that could go to the few that matter.

Not every low-traffic page is a problem. Some pages exist to support customers who already found you, such as policies, contact details, or product support. Mark those so they are not judged by search traffic, and judge the rest by whether they answer a question people search for.

The way out is a content audit. List every page with its clicks, impressions, and index status, and decide what each one is for.

Common traits

  • Page count has risen steadily over time
  • A handful of pages earn most of the clicks
  • Many pages have no clicks over several months
  • Several pages cover nearly the same topic
  • Some pages are not indexed, or are indexed late

Why it happens

  1. Pages were published for volume

Output was measured by count, not by whether each page serves a real question.

  2. Pages overlap

Several pages target the same topic, so none of them stands out.

  3. Template pages have little unique content

Location or product pages that differ only by a name give a search engine little reason to index or rank them.

  4. Pages are hard to find

Pages with no internal links, or buried deep in the structure, get little attention from crawlers or visitors.

How to confirm it in Doily

  1. Run a site audit and read the ranked fixes, noting which affect many pages at once.
  2. Open rank tracking and check how many tracked keywords rank on the pages you suspect are weak.
  3. Use keyword research to see whether the topics have search demand or questions behind them.
  4. Use competitor gap analysis to see which topics competitors win with fewer pages.

Fixes to try

Fix Impact Effort
Audit every page for clicks, impressions, index status, and purpose High Medium
Merge overlapping pages into 1 stronger page and redirect the old URLs High Medium
Improve pages that have demand but weak content High High
Remove or noindex pages with no purpose, after checking they have no links or traffic Medium Medium
Add internal links to the pages you want to grow Medium Low
Set a rule for new pages: each needs a target question and a reason to exist Medium Low

What to watch after

  • Share of pages with at least 1 click
  • Indexed pages against published pages
  • Clicks per page
  • Hours spent updating low-value pages

Questions

Should I delete pages with no traffic?

Not automatically. Check whether the page has links, serves a purpose, or could be improved. Merge or redirect it where it overlaps another page.

How many pages should a site have?

As many as it has distinct questions and offers to cover. There is no ideal number.

Does noindex help?

It keeps a page out of search while leaving it on the site. Use it for pages that should exist for visitors but not in search results.
