Mentioned in AI answers but never linked.

The pattern in one line

AI engines name your business in answers, but the links go to other sites or to no one.

A mention names your brand, and a citation links to a page. Engines can name you based on what other sites say, which sends the link to those sites. To earn the link, give engines a page on your own site that states the answer clearly and is easy to reach. Compare mentions with cited sources per prompt.

What this looks like

The answer names your business, so on a mention count you look fine. Then you open the sources and none of them is yours. The engine mentioned you, then linked to a review site, a directory, and a news article.

A mention and a citation are different outcomes. A mention means the engine included your name in the text. A citation means it pointed to a page as support. When an engine learns about you from other sites, it tends to cite those sites, and your own pages never enter the picture.

This matters because a link is the part of an answer that sends someone to you. A reader who sees your name and a link to a stranger’s page may never reach your site, and may form an impression based on what that page says.

A good test is to read the answer as a customer would. If the engine names you and the reader clicks the first source, where do they land? If the destination is a page you do not control, you have found the page to compete with.

The pattern does not mean the other sites are doing something wrong. It means your own pages are not the best available source for the question being asked.

Common traits

  • Your name appears in the text of the answer
  • The sources listed beside it belong to other sites
  • Answers point to review sites, directories, or articles about you
  • Your own pages are cited rarely or never
  • Referral visits from AI engines are low compared with mentions

Why it happens

  1. Third-party pages say it more clearly

A roundup that describes you in 2 sentences can be easier to cite than a page on your site that never says it directly.

  2. Your page does not match the question

Engines look for a page that answers the specific question. A general home page rarely does.

  3. Your pages are hard to reach or read

Blocked crawlers, content inside scripts, and slow pages can keep an engine from using them.

  4. No page claims the topic

If no page on your site is clearly the 1 for the question, there is nothing for an engine to link to.

How to confirm it in Doily

  1. Open AI visibility and compare mentions with cited sources for each prompt.
  2. List the prompts where your brand is named and none of your pages is cited.
  3. Open the cited sources for those answers and note which sites carry the link instead.
  4. Check the brands mentioned alongside you and whether their own pages are cited.

Fixes to try

Fix Impact Effort
Create or rework a page for each question where you are named but not cited, with the answer at the top High Medium
Confirm AI crawlers can reach those pages and read them without scripts High Low
Add structured data that matches what the page shows, as a supporting step Low Low
Link to the page from related pages on your site so its role is clear Medium Low
Ask the sites that currently get the link to keep their description of you accurate and link to your page where it fits Low High

What to watch after

  • Citations of your own pages per prompt
  • Mentions without a citation
  • Referral visits from AI engines
  • Which third-party pages still take the link

Questions

Is a mention without a link worth anything?

Yes. It puts your name in front of the reader, but it does less to send them to you. Track both.

Does FAQ schema make engines cite me?

There is no guarantee. Google says no special markup is needed to appear in its AI features, and it stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search on May 7, 2026. Markup can make a page easier to interpret, but the visible content has to carry the answer.

Which pages do engines cite most?

It varies by prompt and engine. Look at the cited sources in your own data instead of assuming.
