Breadcrumb schema generator.

List the levels of your breadcrumb trail from the home page down to the current page, and the tool builds BreadcrumbList JSON-LD with the right positions. Reorder levels with the move buttons, or paste a page address to start from its folders. Google needs a trail of at least 2 levels.

Optional. Each folder in the address becomes a level, starting at the home page.

Google needs at least 2 levels, and every level except the last needs an address. See its guidance on breadcrumb structured data.

This tool runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or stored.

How to use it

  1. Start a trail Add the levels by hand, or paste the page address and select Build trail to turn its folders into levels.
  2. Name each level Use the words visitors see in the breadcrumb on the page, and give each level its full address.
  3. Put the levels in order Use the up and down buttons so the top level is first and the current page is last.
  4. Copy the JSON-LD Choose whether to leave the address off the last level, then paste the code on the page.

Why it matters

A breadcrumb trail shows where a page sits in a site, such as Home, Services, Drain cleaning. BreadcrumbList markup describes the same trail to search engines. Google describes a breadcrumb trail as a page's position in the site hierarchy, and the trail in your markup should match the one visitors can see on the page.

The rules are short. Google needs a BreadcrumbList with at least 2 ListItem entries. Each one needs a position, starting at 1, and a name. Every level except the last also needs an item, the full address of that level. For the last level the address is optional, and when it is missing Google uses the address of the page itself. The tool numbers the positions for you, so they stay in order when you move a level.

Names matter more than they look. Use short, readable labels rather than raw folder names such as running-shoes, and keep them the same across pages so a section always has the same name. If a page can be reached by more than 1 path, Google allows several trails on 1 page, each as its own BreadcrumbList. Generate each trail separately and put them in 1 script block as an array.

Questions

Should the last level have an address?

It is optional. Leaving it out is common because it is the page the trail sits on. Including it is also valid.

Do I need a visible breadcrumb on the page?

Yes, add one. Structured data should describe content that visitors can see, and a visible trail also helps them move around the site.

Can a page have more than 1 trail?

Yes. Give each trail its own BreadcrumbList and place them together in an array.

Does the first level have to be the home page?

No. Most sites start at the home page because it is the top of the hierarchy, but Google accepts any starting level.
