Share of voice calculator.

Enter how many prompts you checked and how many AI answers mention you and each competitor. The tool returns each brand's mention rate and share of voice, with a bar chart. Mention rate is the share of answers that name a brand. Share of voice is that brand's mentions divided by all the mentions you tracked.

Count each prompt on each engine as 1. 20 prompts on 3 engines is 60.

The brands below are example data. Replace them with your own counts.

Brand Mentions Mention rate Share of voice

Mention rate
Answers that name the brand, divided by prompts checked. Mention rates can overlap, because several brands can appear in one answer.
Share of voice
One brand's mentions, divided by the total mentions of every brand you entered. Shares add up to 100 percent.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of prompts checked Count each prompt on each engine as one. 20 prompts on 3 engines is 60.
  2. Add your brand and competitors For each one, enter how many of those answers mentioned it.
  3. Read both numbers Mention rate shows how often a brand appears. Share of voice shows how much of the total conversation it holds.
  4. Repeat on a schedule Use the same prompts and counting rule each time so changes mean something.

Why it matters

In AI search there is no ranking list to read. You ask an engine a question and it names a few brands, or none. Counting how often each brand appears across a fixed set of prompts is the simplest way to turn that into something you can compare over time.

Two numbers answer different questions. Mention rate asks how often you appear: 12 mentions in 40 answers is 30 percent. Share of voice asks how much of the conversation you hold against the brands you track: 12 of 60 total mentions is 20 percent. Mention rate can rise while share of voice falls, if competitors rise faster.

The result is only as good as the sample. Use the same prompts each time, write them the way a customer would ask, include prompts where you are not the obvious answer, and decide up front what counts as a mention. A brand named in a list of 8 is not the same as the one recommended first, so keep your counting rule consistent. Run the same set on each engine you care about, since engines name different brands, and compare like with like when you re-check.

Questions

What counts as a mention?

Decide before you count. A simple rule is that the brand name appears in the answer text. A stricter rule counts only recommendations or first position. Use one rule for every brand.

How many prompts should I check?

Enough that one odd answer does not move the result. 20 to 30 prompts is a workable start for a local business, and more for a broad market. Small samples can swing several points between runs.

Why do mention rates not add up to 100 percent?

Several brands can appear in the same answer, so mention rates overlap. Share of voice is divided across all mentions, so it adds up to 100 percent.

Which competitors should I include?

The 3 to 6 you actually compete with for customers. A long list dilutes your share and makes the chart hard to read.
