Rankings measure where you sit. Traffic depends on how many people search and how many of them click you. Either can change without your position moving.
Check these causes in order.
A clean way to diagnose it: export clicks by page for both periods, subtract, and sort. If 3 pages account for most of the loss, open those pages and their top queries first. If the loss is spread across everything, look at the site-wide causes: tracking, demand, or the layout of the results page.
Do not rewrite content until you know which one it is. Changes made against the wrong cause usually cost a month and fix nothing.
A 30 minute triage.
Export clicks by page for both periods in Search Console, subtract, and sort. If 3 pages hold most of the loss, start with them. Check the same pages for changes in position, impressions, and click-through rate.
Flat position and flat impressions with fewer clicks points to the results page layout or the snippet. Fewer impressions points to demand.
What the research says about AI summaries and clicks.
Pew Research Center found people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits that showed an AI summary and in 15% of visits that did not, using the Google searches of 900 U.S. adults from March 2025. Ahrefs estimated a 58% lower click-through rate for the top result when an AI Overview appears, but its own earlier run said 34.5%, so the estimate moves a lot.
Google says total organic clicks are relatively stable and has not published figures. No study settles it. Check your own queries before you blame the summary.
