How prompt location works

Doily is opening soon. These articles describe how the product works at launch.

Quick answer

Write prompts at state level and include the state. When a pool is set to a city, county, ZIP, or DMA, Doily appends that location before the check and sets the engine's own location parameter where one exists. Your stored prompt stays as written, and the sent prompt shows under it in Responses when it differs.

Before you start

  • A prompt written at state level, with the state included
  • A pool with the location you want to check

Steps

  1. Write at state level

Write prompts the way a customer in your state would ask, and include the state. For example: Who is the best dentist in Texas?

  2. Set the location on the pool

A pool can be set to a country, a state, a city, a county, a ZIP, or a DMA. Pools also split by device and engine.

  3. Let Doily add the local detail

For pools set to a city, county, ZIP or DMA, Doily adds that location automatically when it runs the check.

  4. Let the engine use its own setting

Where an engine has its own location parameter, Doily sets it to match the pool. Engines that have none rely on the added location in the prompt.

  5. Compare the stored and sent prompts

Open Responses. Your stored prompt is shown as you wrote it, and the prompt that was sent appears under it when the two differ.

Tips

  • Do not add the city to a prompt in a city pool. Doily adds it, and repeating it can change what the engine is asked.
  • To compare two cities, create 2 pools for the same prompt. Each pool keeps its own results.

Troubleshooting

Why do two pools give different answers for the same prompt?

Each pool adds its own location before the check, so the engine is asked a different local question. Different answers are expected.

Does every engine treat location the same way?

No. Each check is labeled with the location level that was actually used, such as country or city, so you can see how precise it was.

Can I see exactly what was asked?

Yes. Open Responses and look under the stored prompt. When the sent prompt differs, it is shown there.
