Read the local map grid

Doily is opening soon. These articles describe how the product works at launch.

Quick answer

The local map grid checks where your business listing appears in Google Maps results from a grid of points around it, from 3x3 to 9x9, spaced 0.5, 1, 2, or 5 miles apart. Scans run weekly by default and use points: 1 point for each keyword at each grid location.

Before you start

  • A Google Business Profile listing for your business
  • A keyword you want to check locally

Steps

  1. Choose the grid size

Pick 3x3, 5x5, 7x7, or 9x9. A bigger grid covers more of the area around your business, and it uses more points.

  2. Choose the spacing

Spacing can be 0.5, 1, 2, or 5 miles between points. The default is 1 mile. Use a smaller spacing for dense cities and a larger one for wide service areas.

  3. Choose the keyword and cadence

Pick the keyword to scan. Scans run weekly by default, and you can choose a faster cadence. The point cost is shown before you save.

  4. Read the colors

Each point shows your position in the results there: 1 to 3 green, 4 to 7 gold, 8 to 12 orange, and 13 or lower red. Not found is drawn as 21 in red.

  5. Read the summary numbers

Each scan reports your average position, the number of points where you are in the top 3 and top 10, your best and worst point, and your share of local voice, which is the points ranked 1 to 3 divided by all points.

Tips

  • A 7x7 grid with 1 keyword uses 49 points per scan. Plan your monthly points before you add keywords.
  • Starter includes 1,000 grid points a month and Team includes 5,000. A pack of 10,000 points costs $25 once and never expires.
  • New grids default to the mobile device.

Troubleshooting

A scan did not start. Why?

A scan that would use more points than you have left does not start, and the app shows the shortfall. Reduce the grid size or add a points pack.

Is the grid available on Free?

No. Grid points are included on Starter, Team, and Agency plans.

Why does my listing show as not found at some points?

Your listing was not in the results checked at that spot. Points far from the business often show this, which is normal.
