How rank positions are colored
Doily is opening soon. These articles describe how the product works at launch.
Quick answer
Keyword positions 1 to 3 are green, 4 to 10 are yellow, and 11 and below are red. The local map grid uses a separate scale: 1 to 3 green, 4 to 7 gold, 8 to 12 orange, and 13 and below red. A listing that is not found is drawn as 21 in red.
Before you start
- At least one keyword being tracked
Steps
-
Read the keyword colors
In the rankings list, positions 1 to 3 are green, 4 to 10 are yellow, and 11 or lower are red. Page 1 of Google is positions 1 to 10.
-
Look at the change
Each position also shows how it moved compared with the last check. Rankings are checked daily on Google on paid plans and weekly on Free.
-
Read the map grid colors
On the local map grid, 1 to 3 is green, 4 to 7 is gold, 8 to 12 is orange, and 13 or lower is red. The grid has more steps because local results are shorter lists.
-
Understand not found
When a business does not appear in the results checked for a grid point, the point is drawn in red as 21 and counted as 21 in the average rank.
-
Use the colors to choose what to fix
Start with yellow keywords near the top of the range. A move from position 5 to position 3 is closer than a move from position 30 to position 10.
Tips
- Colors describe position only. A green keyword with little search volume can matter less than a yellow keyword that many people search.
- Check the device and area on a pool before comparing it with another. Positions differ by location and device.
Troubleshooting
Why is a keyword red on my list but green on the map grid?
They measure different things. The list shows organic Google results for the pool's area. The grid shows map results from many points around a business listing.
Why did a position change when nothing changed on my site?
Search results change as competitors update their pages and as Google adjusts results. Look at the trend over several checks.
What does 21 mean on the grid?
It stands for not found in the results checked, which is drawn as 21 in red so it is easy to see.
