What a site audit checks
Doily is opening soon. These articles describe how the product works at launch.
Quick answer
A site audit crawls the pages of a domain you track every week and reports the issues it finds. Issues are grouped as errors, warnings, and notices, with errors weighted most. Audit pages are a monthly quota: Starter includes 5,000 pages and Team includes 50,000.
Before you start
- A domain added to a project
Steps
-
Let the weekly crawl run
Doily crawls each tracked domain once a week. You can read the latest result at any time without starting anything.
-
Start with errors
Errors are the issues most likely to hurt how search engines read your site, and they carry the most weight. Fix them before anything else.
-
Work through warnings
Warnings are worth fixing but are less urgent than errors. Group them by the type of issue so one fix clears many pages.
-
Review notices last
Notices are small observations. Read them for ideas, and do not treat them as problems.
-
Compare with the last crawl
After you ship fixes, look at the next weekly crawl to confirm that the issue counts went down.
Tips
- Fix issues that appear on many pages first. One template change can clear hundreds of pages at once.
- Audit pages count the pages crawled each month. Large sites use more of the quota than small ones.
- Use the quick audit for a one-time look at a domain that is not in a project yet.
Troubleshooting
Why are some of my pages missing from the audit?
Audit pages are a monthly quota for each plan, so a very large site may not be fully covered on a smaller plan.
Is a site audit the same as a quick audit?
No. A site audit is the weekly crawl of a domain you track. A quick audit is a one-time snapshot of a domain, and it has its own monthly allowance. Free covers your own domain.
Can I run a crawl on demand?
Yes. A crawl can also be started on demand, in addition to the weekly one.
